Goals

01

User

The main users will be housekeeping/ janitorial staff. 80% of users will be female with an average age of 45 years. This device needed to reflect their needs and capabilities while on the job.

02

Environment

The device’s main target environments are offices, restaurants, and hotels. Additional environments may be gyms, clinics, and retail spaces. This device needed to be harmonious in many environments.

03

Cost

Since this is a lower-cost device, DFM decisions must be made to help reduce unnecessary complexity and minimize part count and processing.

Concept Development

The focus of the concept generation was to create a device that was trustworthy enough to embody its virus-killing abilities while also being approachable enough to not seem medical or intimidating. The concepts focused on smooth forms and clean lines to create a sense of precision while also having a friendly character.

Design Development

Creating a simple and ergonomic experience for the user was critical in making sure the device would not cause fatigue over extended periods of use. Explorations into ergonomics of the handle, screen, cable wrap, and UI played a role in improving the overall daily user experience. The wheels and handles were offset from each other to reduce accidental collisions with your feet during transportation. The location of the light pipe on the top of the unit was placed so that it would always be visible, even from directly next to the device.
